The Japanese Texans: A Revolution in Rice Cultivation - Won 1st Place at State [2023]
Geospacial Analysis of Japanese Immigration & Acreage of Rice Farming in Texas Shows the Impact of an Important Immigrant Community
Did you know that in 2022, Texas was the fourth largest producer of rice in the United States producing 1.45 billion pounds of rice that year? Rice farming holds significant importance, as it not only provides jobs and bolsters the economy, but also feeds communities around the world, maintains the environment, and serves as a critical habitat for wildlife.
Despite its present success, Texas rice production has not always been this robust. Dating back to the 1800s, rice cultivation was quite low until it witnessed a remarkable surge in the 1900s. What led to this change? The answer lies in the invaluable contributions of Japanese immigrants who greatly influenced Texas rice production. Utilizing the “Science of Where,” we can analyze geospatial evidence to showcase the instrumental role they played in this agricultural transformation.
Austin's Most Dangerous Roads - Won 1st Place at State [2022]
From the perspective of a beginning driver
How would you feel if you lived in an area where you had to drive the most dangerous road in the Austin area every day? As a new driver, that is a terrifying thought. However, that got me wondering: where is the most dangerous road in Austin?
To answer this question, I employed the "Science of Where" to figure it out. It is important to understand our surroundings, especially while we are doing something that has the potential to be extremely dangerous, such as driving. This helps us prevent dangerous situations from happening, and allows us to be better prepared for whatever comes our way.
